Illustration: Styles and Techniques

Overview

This course is a practical project based course designed to develop an illustration folio using a variety of techniques, styles and media. Students will explore collage, pen, brush and wash work artwork for a range of contexts such as books, magazines, packaging, cards and other commercial illustration vehicles. Participants will explore use of colour, styles of illustration and working to a brief. This class takes the participant through demonstrations and practical exercises. Students work to briefs and complete finished illustration work.

Ideal for

This course is for students who wish to create a folio of illustrations or for those who wish to investigate new media and techniques in their own work or those interested in illustrating their own words.

Outcome

Students will gain an insight into a variety of techniques, improve the skills needed to use media and complete a range of projects.

Pre-requisites

An interest in drawing and/or illustration.

Materials supplied

A kit of materials will be provided. Materials for demonstrations and class exercises will be supplied.

Materials to bring

Students need to bring a pencil and a drawing pad to the first class
A list of suggested materials will be provided in the first class, (materials may cost approx. $30-50)

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation

Course Presenter - Lorette Broekstra
Lorette is a graphic designer and an award-winning illustrator of children's books. She has won the Crichton Award for illustration and has been short listed for a number of other awards. She has published many picture books both in Australia and overseas.
