Book Repair and Restoration


This course is a continuation of Bookbinding - Introduction and will introduce and demonstrate a number of common restoration techniques for those students who have moved from the introductory course (or similar) and require specific instruction. You will work on your own projects under supervision and direction of experienced staff. Tools and equipment in the bindery is available to use as needed for projects.

In this course the projects are self-paced and the outcome reflects the individual’s selection of projects.


Students should have completed Bookbinding - Introduction or have a sound understanding of book structure.

Materials supplied

Some materials will be provided. All hand tools are available for use during class time.

Materials to bring

  • Sponge roller from art store medium size
  • Cheap pack brushes for gluing
  • Acrylic paints student quality paints variety of colours (no fluro's or metalics)


Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation.

Additional notes

Students are advised to bring a few books on the first evening to be assessed and worked on the duration of the course.
