Introduction To The Building Design Process

Overview

This course provides an introduction to the Building Design process, covering the underpinning principles in a practical hands-on approach. Students will gain appreciation of the building design process through a series of exercises centred on an actual site near the class room and the conceptual design of dual residence/design office. Stages will include

Initial site investigation
An examination of the building regulation
Consideration of visual and spatial design criteria
Consideration of construction principles
Basic drafting and 3D modelling

Course content

Understanding the site evaluation and analysis process.
An introduction to the regulations influencing the design of buildings
Building design processes and principles
Introduction to basic residential construction systems
Apply the principals of design and construction to a building project
Basic drafting of building plans
Creating a 3d model of the design project
Apply the principles of design to two dimensional and three dimensional projects
Explore appropriate technology and techniques to achieve a specific design outcome

Ideal for

Anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of the building design process. May be students looking at entering Architecture or Building design degrees or those who are just after a general understanding of how designers design buildings.

On completion of this course, participants will have developed an understanding of the fundamentals of building design process.
