Introduction to Jewellery Design and Making

Overview

In this short course participants will be introduced to jewellery design and making. The objective will be to learn about contemporary jewellery design and practice and to delve into the material processes of Gold & Silversmithing. Participants will work creatively from original drawings using essential processes to explore contemporary forms in metal.

Course content

Participants will commence designing and making jewellery objects utilising introductory Gold & Silversmithing techniques. Through a series of learning activities participants will develop ideas and designs through drawings and assemblages; Experience technical processes and working with metals specifically related to Gold & Silversmithing practice; Use different metal fabrication techniques such as sawing, filing, cold-joining and soldering to make a jewellery piece.

Ideal for

This course is suited to participants with little or no experience in a Gold & Silversmithing studio who are interested in learning about jewellery design and making.

Important Information

Course leader Claire McArdle is a contemporary jeweller who has exhibited internationally since 2011 in Hong Kong, USA, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Austria and The Netherlands. McArdle has received numerous awards and grants including First Prize, Contemporary Wearables '13.

Outcome

The objective is to gain knowledge about contemporary jewellery practice and to make a creative personal jewellery design using introductory Gold & Silversmithing techniques.

Participants who would like to continue on can enrol in Introduction to Jewellery Design and Making 2 or they may use the skills developed towards folio preparation Gold & Silversmithing specialisation in the Bachelors of Fine Art in the School of Art. 

Materials supplied

Some basic materials will be provided.

Materials to bring

Personal Protective Equipment, a developed tool & material list will be sent to participants.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation.

Additional notes

Introduction to Jewellery Design and Making will be taught in dedicated, specialist Gold & Silversmithing Studios.
