Proofreading - Introduction

Overview

This course covers the basics of how to proofread documents for publication. Participants are taught the standard proofreading marks and how to apply them to a familiarisation exercise and proofs of real−life documents such as brochures and book chapters both in fiction and non−fiction texts. Materials for proofing may also be fully customised to the specific needs of your workplace.

  • apply tips and techniques for more accurate proofreading
  • spot common proofreading slips
  • feel more confident when proofreading.

Ideal for

This course is for people who find themselves having to edit or proofread someone else's words for publication. Suitable for work with books, reports, community newspapers, magazines, brochures, government and corporate publications, newsletters, self-published works and other general fiction or non-fiction publications.

This introductory course is designed for those new to proofreading.

Outcome

You will know the basic proofreading symbols and how to mark up page proofs. You can also spot common errors and use professional techniques to proofread fiction and non-fiction texts more accurately.

Materials supplied

Handouts for instruction, exercises and sample answers.

Materials to bring

You are required to bring a blue pen, a red pen and a ruler.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Certificate of Completion.

Course Presenter: Lu Sexton is an accredited editor with a background in the arts. She has been freelancing since 2009 and works with fiction, corporate writing and everything in between. Her teaching experience includes teaching event management at VU, community arts at Deakin University and most recently, the Copyediting - Introduction, Copyediting - Advanced and Proofreading - Introduction short courses at RMIT www.lusexton.com
