Proofreading - Advanced

Overview

Do you want to improve and expand your proofreading skills?

This advanced course builds on your experience and familiarity with basic proofreading in order to develop your speed, accuracy, efficiency, versatility, confidence and thoroughness.

Through discussion, demonstration and practical exercises, you will explore ways to proofread complex documents when working on challenging projects under pressure.

Applying the standard marks for correcting text, typography and layout

Errors - why they occur and what you can do about them

Working with house styles and style variations

Proofing complex layouts and structures

Ideal for

This course is suited to anyone who works with print publications, from a community newspaper or staff newsletter, to literary collections, catalogues, brochures, press releases, research papers, and reports.

Students who have not completed the Proofreading - Introduction short course are expected to have some experience in editing and/or publishing activity, and to be familiar with proofreading marks.

Completion of this course will not guarantee entry into an RMIT Program.

Outcome

A range of strategies and techniques are taught to proofread print material with accuracy and speed in a range of contexts, and to mark it up in appropriate and professional ways for correction.

Pre-requisites

Good general English language skills and a good grasp of the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation and spelling. Familiarity with standard proofreading mark-up technique.

Materials supplied

Students are supplied with notes and exercises.

Materials to bring

Pen/pencil and notebook. You are also welcome to bring examples of the kind of writing, documents or publications you currently work on or would like to discuss.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Certificate of Completion.

Susan Keogh

Susan Keogh, DE, is an award-winning editor with more than two decades of experience. She has trained publishing and corporate staff in writing and communication skills in Australia and Singapore, currently lectures in RMIT’s Master of Communications and is starting her own publishing company.
