Outcome

Students will develop an understanding of what editors are seeking from freelance feature writers. They will learn how to identify a fresh angle on a story and pitch it to appropriate publications. They will be introduced to the basic formulas of feature writing, including for travel articles, opinion pieces and personal columns, and informative features. These skills will help them to write commercially publishable articles for print and online media.

Pre-requisites

Students must be 18 or over and should have an interest in writing for publication.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Certificate of Completion.

Dr Sian Prior is a writer, broadcaster and teacher of journalism and nonfiction writing. She has worked as a journalist for 25 years and taught writing at RMIT for over a decade. She also runs community writing workshops and mentors individual writers.
