Podcasting - An Introduction

Overview

Ever wanted to make a podcast? Podcasting is more relevant than ever with global superstars like This American Life, Radiolab, Serial and S-Town attracting tens of millions of listeners.

This course will teach the basics of getting a podcast up and running, from what gear to buy, to how to record interviews and edit audio, to how to distribute and market your podcast.

Over one action-packed day you’ll produce your very own mini-podcast and get your hands dirty with recording, editing and mastering audio.

Absolute beginners welcome, and no equipment required. Students MUST be familiar with MAC!

• Introduction to podcasts – how does it all work?
• Understanding equipment – recorders, microphones, editing software
• Learn how to prepare for interviews and to record good audio
• Editing and mastering audio
• Finding music and creating atmosphere in audio storytelling
• Writing for radio and record scripts
• Learn how to market and distribute a podcast

This course is suitable for anyone interested in podcasts, journalism or storytelling. Beginners are welcome! (MUST have MAC experience)

Outcome

On completing this course, the student will know the basics of how to make and distribute a podcast. They will get hands-on experience recording, editing and mastering audio. They will gain an understanding of how to prepare for interviews and how to write and record scripts for radio. They will be familiar with a range of podcasts, audio editing software and and podcast distribution platforms.

Pre-requisites

No prior Podcasting knowledge or experience required.
Familiarity with the Macintosh operating system a must. For help, go to www.apple.com/au/support/macbasics

Materials supplied

All relevant course materials are included.

We supply audio recording gear, recording studios and software. The software used is Adobe Audition.

Materials to bring

Pen/pencil and notebook.

Please bring a USB if you want to take your work away with you.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Certificate of Completion.

Facilitator

Janak Rogers
Janak Rogers is an Australian-born journalist, working principally in radio and television. He has made podcasts, radio documentaries and reports for the BBC World Service, Deutsche Welle, Radio France Internationale, Radio Netherlands, ABC Radio Australia, ABC Radio National, Australia Network Television and others. He currently teaches writing, photography and broadcast subjects in Journalism at RMIT and is a regular producer for ABC Radio National.
