Shoe Making: Creating Footwear by Hand

Overview

This course is ideal for people who are interested in the craft of designing and making footwear by hand. Learn the art of shoe making with an industry expert and make yourself an amazing pair of low heeled ballet flats or unisex Derby simple lace ups. Over this 42 hour foundational footwear course you will have the opportunity to familiarise with the skills and techniques required for shoe making. The course is conducted in a fabulously equipped specialised leather working studio at RMIT's Brunswick campus where traditional technique combines with state-of-the-art resources and expert tuition.

Outcome

Students will learn how to make a pair of low heeled court shoes (ballet flats) OR a pair of Derby shoes (simple unisex lace-ups) from pattern cutting through to completion.

Materials supplied

All materials, including black or brown leather, for the course are supplied. Tools will be available for use within the department.

Materials to bring

Please bring a sketchbook and pencils to sketch with and an eraser.

Award

Participants will be emailed an RMIT Certificate of Participation after completion.

Jose Rodriguez

José Rodríguez is a teacher at RMIT and owner and creative designer at his business, Rodríguez and Rose bespoke handmade shoes. He comes from a family of artisans and is passionate about life and all things shoes.
Experienced in shoemaking, construction and design, José has a ‘Certificate IV in Custom Footwear’, RMIT, which he was inspired to undertake after completing the 13 week short course ‘Designing and Making Footwear by Hand’. Located at Trades Hall Carlton, Australia, José works in his studio making bespoke handmade leather shoes, boots, sandals and tote bags using hand tools and shoe making machinery. The bespoke shoemaking process includes carefully and lovingly hand selecting the best quality materials from local suppliers, one-to-one shoe design consultation, foot measurements, development of a prototype, construction and final fitting of a pair of shoes. Combining his artisan heritage and Latin passion, his unique one-off designs are proudly made in Melbourne blending traditional shoemaking skills with contemporary process and design innovation. With no pair ever the same, his local and interstate customers appreciate that Rodríguez and Rose shoes are an expression of their personality.
