Sewing 4: Couture Techniques - The Tailored Jacket

Overview

An enrichment class to take your sewing skills to the next level, following on from the Chanel-style Jacket and/or the Classic White Shirt. 

Students will select their commercial jacket pattern of their choice and develop the appropriate tailoring techniques to produce a professionally finished garment, focussing on a personalised fit.

 

Course content

This course covers the tailoring techniques required to complete a fully structured, tailored jacket. Techniques include using interlinings, creating, and supporting shapes and design details such as the jetted pocket, the tailored collar, the tailored sleeve, jacket lining and button-holes.

Stdents will learn the advantages of working with a mannequin. There will be opportunities to complete samples to practice detailed construction techniques prior to incorporating them into their final garment e.g. welted pockets, button-holes.

Ideal for

Students who have completed Sewing 3 courses: the Chanel-Style Jacket and/or the Classic White Shirt.

Outcome

On completion of this course, participants will have gained the confidence and expertise required to further develop their garment production abilities, focusing on personalized fit, advanced construction techniques and professional finishes.

Pre-requisites

Students who have completed Sewing 3 courses: the Chanel-Style Jacket and/or the Classic White Shirt or have equivalent experience.

Materials supplied

Calico for toile (sample garment) provided.
Pattern-making paper for alterations.

Materials to bring

Students must bring all necessary fabric, patterns, thread, accessories, zips, sewing kit etc in order to fulfil their own project.

 

Award

Participants will be emailed an RMIT Statement of Participation after completion of the course.
