Sewing Intensive

Overview

These sewing classes are suited to both beginner & intermediate level, held in our state-of-the-art sewing production studio in Melbourne. Enrol in this sewing course and you will learn to craft your own clothes that suit and actually fit your body. During 30 hours of tuition from our sewing experts you will learn techniques of top designers, as well as learning how to fit & adjust commercial patterns to your size, so that your garments look professionally made.

Course content

Start your journey learning simple skills through making a pair of unisex pyjama pants and then progress through to making a skirt. For those who competently complete these projects you will finalize your pyjamas project by making the matching top.

• Sewing machine familiarity, maintenance & safety.
• Sewing straight lines, curved, mountains.
• Seams: open, flat, French, overlocked.
• Darts.
• Measuring.
• Small Trouser Hooks and Bars.
• Interfacing.
• Hems.
• Vent splits.
• Skirt zipper.
• Waistband attachment.
• Buttonhole placement demonstration.
• Understanding and fitting patterns.

Ideal for

This is a beginner level course. Intermediate students, especially those that are self-taught, may also find it useful to attend to get expert tuition from our experienced tutors and learn sewing tips and tricks used by professionals. Places fill quickly so enrol as early as possible.

Important Information

For health & safety reasons, students need to wear closed toe shoes, no thongs or sandals and long hair is to be tied back and no long necklaces or scarves worn during class.

If you are travelling from out of state it is highly recommended that you wait for your course confirmation letter before booking any flights.

Outcome

By the end of this course, participants will have a very good knowledge of sewing and will have produced 2 or 3 garments (pyjama pants, skirt, pyjama top) depending on their individual pace of learning.

Students who complete this course can then continue their Sewing journey by moving into one of our continuing intermediate courses such as Sewing 2 (dress and pants), Alterations, Lingerie and Swimwear or Tailoring (see links below).

Materials supplied

Pattern for Pyjamas project included in course fee. You will learn in our state-of-the-art sewing production studio using our sewing machines and overlockers.

Materials to bring

You will receive a detailed list of materials required for this course approx 7 days before course commences, it includes fabric (approx. $15 for the first pyjama pant project) and a basic sewing kit.

Award

Participants will be emailed an RMIT Certificate of Participation after completion.

Sandra Doutsas

Sandra Doutsas has been teaching since 1983, her early years specialising in Primary Teaching. In 1994 she completed the Advanced Certificate in Designer Dressmaking (Small Business), during her studies she entered competitions and in 1995 her gown was chosen by The Australian Gown of the Year to travel in their show around Australia. Sandra joined RMIT in 1999 to teach sewing. Since this time she has helped to build the sewing short course to a high level and it has become well known for its exceptional standards. Her passion for teaching has continued to grow. Through continued observation, she has incorporated into her classes a variety of techniques and methods that have helped her students, especially those that are just beginning their sewing journey. In 2003 Sandra started her Fashion business in High Street, Northcote. She began with designing and making her own range of clothing and millinery as well as bespoke dressmaking for clients. She also ran sewing classes and millinery classes. Nowadays she has transformed her business into a very on-trend boutique and has successfully continued to maintain and run her classes on a regular basis. Her business has been nominated and won prizes in the Leader Business Awards as well as The Australian Business Quality Awards for Customer Service. Another of her achievements has been the appearance of her business on the TV show Coxy’s Big Break!

Amber Taralaikov

Amber Taralaikov has 25 years experience in bridal wear. She launched her own Couture studio in 2000 with gowns and accessories and has expertise in fine details and embellishment work (lace, beading,tambour. etc). She expanded her knowledge by working with top bridal designers following her studies in Paris and London.
Amber has taught in fashion for 9 years from amateour level to final year students. She loves teaching to inspire people to get creative.
