Sewing 2: Lingerie and Swimwear

Overview

Students will be introduced to the fabrics & trims used in lingerie and intimate apparel and will learn techniques reqiured for stretch and delicate fabrics used in swimwear and lingerie production. Be introduced to the specialist machines that are used in professional production as well as learning how these methods can be replicated at home on a domestic machine. Making at least one piece of lingerie or swimwear, students will work from a choice of commercial patterns in our well equipped sewing studio under the guidance of our expert professional swimwear and lingerie designer and maker.

Course content

  • Discussion of design principles required for lingerie and swimwear
  • Analysis of lingerie and swimwear pieces, understanding the accessories and trims required
  • Introduction to specialist sewing techniques, both in a commercial setting and for home sewing
  • Lace and elastic application methods

Ideal for

This course is suited to people who want to learn specialist skills for making their own beautiful lingerie or swimwear - what a luxury! This course is for accomplished self taught sewing enthusiast used to making clothes from commercial patterns. Otherwise, we reccommend taking the sewing/sewing intensive class.

More information

Outcome

By the end of the course students will have have completed at one piece of lingerie (soft cup bra / briefs) or swimwear (bikini, one piece or tankini). Depending on the complexity of the designs chosen students may complete a second piece.

Pre-requisites

Basic sewing knowledge and working with commercial patterns and industrial machine experience is essential (ie. Sewing 1).

Materials supplied

Students will work in our professional sewing studio and have access to all necessary equipment.

Materials to bring

You will receive a list of materials, including a basic sewing kit, upon course confirmation. Fabric advice will be given in the first session, to be purchased in time for session 2.

Award

Participants will be emailed an RMIT Statement of Participation upon completion.

Additional notes

For health & safety reasons, students need to wear closed toe shoes, no thongs or sandals and long hair is to be tied back and no long necklaces or scarves worn during class.

If you are travelling from out of state it is highly recommended that you wait for your course confirmation letter before booking any flights.

Irene Kounelis

Irene Kounelis has worked in industry for 16 years specialising in women’s lingerie, in particular bras.
The majority of her industry experience has been gained whilst working for a well-known and
established Australian label. Irene has also worked with companies that produce lingerie for major
retail outlets. Currently she works freelance for a range of swimwear and gymwear labels as well as
a teacher of vocational training and short courses.
