Sewing 3: Bridal and Special Occasion Wear


This course will introduce students to couture techniques in order to make stunning and unique dresses whether that be a wedding Dress, bridesmaids dress, formal gown or a special occasion party frock. Ideal for students who want to extend their sewing skills and learn the art of formal / special occasion wear, who have completed the 'Sewing' and 'Sewing 2' short courses at RMIT (or equivalent).

Course content

Students will make a fitted bodice from a supplied pattern (size 8-16) which will form the basis of their dress. Techniques will include:

  • strapless dress understructure
  • boning
  • hand finishing
  • lace work
  • various hem techniques
  • rouleau loops/buttons
  • applique and fabric manipulation
  • beading

This course will concentrate on the boddice, the foundation for these techniques. Design ideas for the skirt part of the dress will also be discussed and demonstrated, students may choose to complete the skirt during class or in their own time depending on how fast they work and the complexity of their design.

Ideal for

This course is ideal for sewing enthusiasts and students who have already completed the RMIT 'Sewing' and 'Sewing 2' courses or equivalent or people who are accomplished at machine sewing to make their own garments. It's for students who want to extend their sewing skills and be introduced to the art of couture.

Important Information

For health & safety reasons, students need to wear closed toe shoes, no thongs or sandals and long hair is to be tied back and no long necklaces or scarves worn during class.

Students will make a fitted bodice which is the most complex element of a special occasion gown, providing the opportunity to learn the essential couture techniques. Depending on the speed that students work and the complexity of their design students may leave the course with a completed dress. 


Students must have already completed the RMIT Sewing course or equivalent or have a good level of experience in machine sewing to make their own garments.

Materials supplied

Students will work in our professional sewing studio and have access to all necessary equipment.

Materials to bring

Bring a basic sewing kit to first session and pen/pencil and notebook for notetaking. Further details, including advice on fabric choice, will be advised in session 1.


Participants will be emailed an RMIT Statement of Participation on successful completion.

Kate Newton

Kate Newton entered the fashion industry as a passionate 18 year old and has forged a career as a patternmaker and seamstress, predominantly in bridal and evening wear. Her love of couture led her to enter and show her work around the country in the Australian Gown of the Year 2002, 2003 and 2004. She has worked for many well-known bridal stores and ran her own boutique business in Surrey Hills creating custom made gowns and ladies tailoring. It was here that she began teaching small classes and workshops and in 2009 began full-time teaching as well as mentoring fashion students and enthusiasts.

Kate has embraced her love of learning and passing on her knowledge by completing a Diploma of Vocational Education & Training and is always pursuing new endeavours to remain inspired and passionate about fashion. Her technical expertise in personal fit, patternmaking and fabrics ensures her students gain valuable insights to further their skills development.
