Sewing 3: Chanel-style Jacket

Overview

This course is an introduction to the advanced construction techniques required to complete a tailored, fully-lined, collarless jacket, similar to the classic and iconic style of the garments created by Coco Chanel.

Course content

Cutting and construction of a ladies collarless jacket, using a commercial pattern (the choice of two designs). Initially, students will taught how to prepare their pattern, adjust it to ensure a perfect fit, and then construct a toile (sample bodice) in calico.

The jacket will be fully-lined and feature pockets (optional), a choice of centre-front fastenings (button closure, zipper or hooks and eyes), and special finishing touches such as fringed trim and braid application (if desired). Attention will be given to internal structures such as fusing, interfacing applications and shoulder pads.

Ideal for

This course is ideal for sewing enthusiasts and students who have already completed the RMIT sewing short courses level 1 and 2, or equivalent, or those with competent machine sewing skills. It is for students who want to extend their sewing ability to create professionally finished garments of a high standard.

Outcome

Students will learn how to:
• apply fundamental tailoring techniques to achieve bespoke fitting and finishing
• consider and select appropriate fabric applications to enhance a garment’s design
• apply both machine and hand-worked stitching

Pre-requisites

It is recommended that students have completed the RMIT sewing short courses level 1 and 2, or equivalent, or have sound experience in garment construction using commercial patterns. This course is not suitable for beginners.

Materials supplied

Students will work in our professional sewing studio and have access to all necessary equipment. Calico will be provided to produce a toile (sample garment to check fit prior to cutting jacket fabric) during the first class.

Fabric (after discussion in first class).
Threads & linings to match.
Sewing kit, fabric and paper scissors.
Pen/pencil and notebook.

Facilitator

Vivien Daniels
Vivien Daniels completed her Fashion Design and Technology studies at RMIT followed by her teacher training at Whitehorse Girls Technical School, which was affiliated with the Fashion Department at Box Hill TAFE. This provided Vivien with the opportunity to work with TAFE teachers and gain pattern making and fashion manufacturing knowledge. Vivien later returned to teach pattern making at Box Hill TAFE. She has kept abreast of developments in fashion and textile education and innovations in fashion technology.
Vivien taught textiles in the secondary education system for many years. More recently she has worked extensively in the Vocational Education and Training sector, teaching the Certificate in Applied Fashion Design and Technology to senior secondary students. Vivien considers one of her strengths to be her extensive garment construction knowledge and her ability to assist students to successfully fit their garments.
She has extensive knowledge of fibres and fabrics, their uses and suitability for different applications. Vivien also has an interest in sustainable fashion and encourages students to increase their awareness of sustainability and the impact of the fashion industry on our environment. Ideas of zero waste, recycling and up-cycling can be explored by evaluating the life cycle of garments.
